We live in a materialistic world where people are often judged by how deep their pockets are. So naturally because of that, we are always curious to find out who in the room has the most money, the fattest bank accounts or who are the top 10 richest in Zambia.

The backbone of our economy is copper mining and although the mining sector contributes to a huge percentage of our GDP, other sectors such as tourism, agriculture, tourism and manufacturing have seen steady growth year by year. 

Today, we take a look at the business men and women who run these sectors - we can refer to them as the top 10 richest in Zambia and how they came to swim in money.

H.E Hakainde Hichilema

Currently the 7th president, His Excellency sits as the richest man in Zambia. Before he entered the politics game, Hakainde was a full time businessman and the second largest cattle rancher in the country. As of 2022, Hakainde Hichilema’s net worth sits at a cool $389 million which is approximately 6,999,280,890 Zambian Kwacha.

Noble Findlay

Back in 2016, Noble Findlay held the number one spot on the top 10 richest people in Zambia list. The businessman alongside his wife founded one of Zambia’s largest companies, Autoworld. Since opening in 1992, the company has over 10 different branches nationwide and offers automotive and marine servicing catering to the needs of any vehicle or boat. Findlay is not far off from the president and as of 2022, his net worth was estimated to be $310 million.

Carl Irwin

Before his retirement in 2018, Carl Irwin was a joint CEO and co-founder of one of the biggest multinational conglomerates in the country, Zambeef.  Employing over 7,000 people across the country with close to 200 outlets, Zambeef is one of the wealthiest companies in Zambia. Carl held his position as CEO for over 23 years and amassed his wealth during this period. The 56 year old remains on the list of top 10 richest Zambian with an estimated net worth of $306 million.

Dr Rajan Mahtani

As the Chairperson of the Finance Bank Zambia, Dr Rajan safely secures his spot on this list. The businessman has a background in finance and law and even holds a PhD Commercial Law from the London Institute of Business Studies school. Over the years, the business tycoon has amassed his wealth from different sources and has an estimated net worth of $304 million.

Robin Miller

Although he started off his career as a journalist, it would be impossible to make a list of the top 10 richest in Zambia without including Robin Miller. Throughout his career the business man has held and served in some very prestigious positions. Some of these positions include, board member of the Zambia Wildlife Authority, the founding Chairman of The Tourism Council of Zambia and a past chairman of ‘The Post’,  Zambia’s leading independent newspaper. The tycoon also deals in real estate and his current net worth sits at an estimated  $301 million

Andrew Sardanis

The late Mr Sardanis safely secures his spot on the list of top 10 richest in Zambia. The former journalist and businessman played a key role in Zambia achieving her independence and was one of the founders of Meridien BIAO Bank in 1984. Sardanis continued to grow his wealth through mergers his majority of his fortune was made within the banking industry. At the time of his death, he had a net worth of an estimated $50 million

Charles Milupi

With shares in Lafarge cement, Copperbelt Energy Corporation Plc, and Tiiseza  Zambia Ltd, Charles undoubtedly belongs on the list of top 10 richest in Zambia. The esteemed businessman is also a fan favourite politician and has an estimated net worth of $210 million

Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba

Another businessman turned politician to claim a spot on the top 10 richest in Zambia list is Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba. Geoffrey amassed the majority of his wealth from business, he continued to add to his net worth when he joined politics in 2009. His current net worth sits at an estimated $218 million.

Satwant Singh

Satwant Singh grew his wealth through motor sports. The car rally driver participated and won the African Rally Championships a total of 8 times between 1988 and 2000. In addition to the fat cheques that came with his wins, Singh also makes money as an entrepreneur. His current net worth is an estimated $90 million.

Hanson Sindowe

Closing off the list of top 10 richest in Zambia is the late Hanson Sindowe who served as chairperson of the Copperbelt Energy Corporation Plc and was also the Co-founder and director of the Zambian Energy Corporation. At the time of his death, Hanson had a net worth of an estimated $248 million USD
