Rugby is one of the most electric games in the world, and when the countries that have the best rugby players are mentioned, Kenya stands among them.
As of 2021, Kenya was ranked at the 34th position in the world of rugby, thanks to the effort of the following gentlemen.
Collins Injera
Playing for Kenya Sevens Collins has made a name for himself in the world of rugby, being the all-time try-scorer in the world Sevens series. Injera started rugby while at Vihiga high school, playing the wing.
He later joined Mwamba RFC in Nairobi. Injera made his debut for Kenya sevens in 2006 at the Dubai Sevens series. In 2009 Collins helped Kenya reach the semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup.
Injera continues to play as a wing for the National Rugby Union team and is a graduate of Daystar University with a degree in Mass Communication.
Humphrey Kayange
Humphrey Kayange happens to be Collins Injera's older brother and their careers have pretty much taken the same direction.
Just like his brother, Kayange played for Mwamba RFC before joining the Kenya National Sevens, where he also served as the captain. Humphrey also plays for the Kenya National Rugby Union team.
Additionally, Kayange is a member of the international Olympics committee and in 2009 was nominated for the Sevens Player of the Year award. He holds a degree in Organic Chemistry.
Andrew Amonde
As team captain, Amonde led the Kenyan team in both the 2016 and 2021 Olympic games, however, the highlight of his rugby career was leading the Kenya Sevens team at the 2016 Singapore Sevens where they won.
It will be interesting to note that Amonde did not initially start as a rugby player. In his formative years at Kisumu Boys High school, he used to play Basketball and handball.
Oyoo led the team in the Vancouver opening leg of the World Sevens series still in 2021. In an interview with the Nation, he said he was inspired by his elder brother to join the world of rugby. He is also a professional Vet.
Billy Odhiambo
Billy the Kid Odhiambo as his peers call him is a story of talent, dedication, and passion. He started his career while in high school playing for Maseno high school rugby team.
It was while there that he was spotted by the Strathmore rugby coach, Mitch Ocholla, and was offered a scholarship to study in Strathmore and play for the school team.
While at Strathmore he got to impress the Kenya Sevens head coach who offered him an opportunity to play for the national team. As a result, the 28-year old got an opportunity to play for the country in the 2016 Olympics as well as the 2014 commonwealth games in Scotland.
