Sonko’s Daughter Nominated For Global Award

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s daughter Sandra Sonko Mbuvi has been nominated for Scream Africa Women Awards. Scream African Women Awards 2021 theme is ‘tackling gender-based violence in the society’. Sandra has been nominated for the category of Brand Influencer of the Year. Sandra is the only Kenyan nominated for the awards coming on top of other Kenyan influencers such as Azziad, Shorn Arwa, Mercy Kyallo, Betty Kyallo, and Sheila Mwanyigha among others.

Other African women nominated in the same category as Sandra include Nengi Hampson (Nigeria), Mercy Eke (Nigeria), Scarlett Duchess (Nigeria), Zari Hassan(Uganda), Fahyvanny (Tanzania), Naija Brandchick (Nigeria), and Uriel Oputa (Nigeria).

Sandra is competing against these African giants and Mike Sonko was elated to have her daughter on the nomination list. Sonko, who has been on the down low ever since he was removed as Nairobi Governor posted a congratulatory message on social media to her daughter saying that her hard work was finally paying off.

Sonko posted a video later in the evening after sharing the good news. In the video, he thanked his followers for voting for her daughter. He also made a point of calling some of the followers who had voted for his daughter and thanking them.

Sonko told the followers he had called that immediately the results were announced he would give them monetary gifts as ‘thank you’ for voting for her daughter. He added that he could not give them cash right now as his daughter would be disqualified from the competition if the organizers felt that he was using monetary means to solicit for votes.

Sandra’s toughest competitors in the category include Zari and Fahyvanny who have large followings on their social media handles and are also active in social causes in their various countries. Sandra also has an active Instagram page with over 50,000 followers where she advertises her businesses and helps brands to market their products. Sandra also has a YouTube Channel called Life with Thee Mbuvis, where she shares lifestyle content on her family and daughter Angel Mbuvi.

Zari has been a victim of domestic violence as she once opened up that in her previous marriage she was physically abused and had to gain a lot of courage to walk away. The Ugandan influencer said that she had to battle self-doubt and shame in order to leave an abusive marriage. She also encouraged other women to gain the courage to leave abusive marriages.

Sandra’s other sister Saumu Mbuvi has been advocating and speaking loudly against domestic violence using her social media pages. Saumu was once dating controversial Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip and together they have a baby girl. Early this year, Saumu broke up with Senator Loitiptip accusing him of beating and threatening to kill her. Ever since Saumu broke up with Senator Loitiptip, she has been creating awareness on domestic violence and asking women to gather the courage to move away from abusive partners.

Kenya’s Tanasha Donna is also among the nominees of Scream African Women Awards 2021 but in a different category as she was nominated for Musician of the Year category. Tanasha Donna is battling the award out against Tiwa Savage (Nigeria), Sho Madjozi (South Africa, Tems (Nigeria), Busiswa (South Africa), Makhadzi (South Africa), Gyakie (Ghana), Teni (Nigeria), Kamo Mphela (South Africa), and Lady Du (South Africa). Tanasha Donna and Sandra Sonko Mbuvi are representing Kenya women in the Scream African Women Awards 2021, and we wish them all the best.
